As you may know, the Joomla! project has announced the end of life for Joomla 2.5 on Dec 31, 2014. That means all Joomla 2.5 websites will not receive any updates including bugs and security updates.
If you’re on version 2.5.x then now is the perfect time to upgrade and move to the latest version of Joomla 3.3.6 (time of writing). If you are planning to start a new Joomla site, we recommend to choose Joomla 3 – it's stable and way cooler.
Check for the latest Joomla! CMS version. If you are not on the latest release, read the release notes to see if you need to upgrade. If a release is being made in order to address security issues then it is strongly advised that you upgrade as soon as possible. You can see the release history of each series in this page. Click the version history link in the notes column to find details on exact release date, release notes and package and MD5s.
